Ben Bogin Residency: "The Second Buddha"
During the Spring 2019 semester, the Tang Teaching Museum will host "The Second Buddha,"
the first exhibition in the United States focused upon Padmasambhava, the legendary
8th century founder of Tibetan Buddhism.
Benjamin Bogin, Director of Asian Studies, has been awarded the 2019 CLTL/OSP Faculty
Residency for a range of events that focus on this exhibition. A number of scholars,
artists, musicians, educators and Tibetan Buddhist lamas will visit campus throughout
the Spring 2019 semester in order to explore aspects of the exhibition.
Some of the confirmed visitors include: Pema Namdol Thaye, a renowned Tibetan painter,
who will work with students in the Art Department and offer a public lecture; Lama
Rod Owens, who applies Tibetan Buddhism to contemporary issues around race, gender,
and sexuality by connecting “radical presence” with social justice; Dominique Townsend,
a scholar and poet who will address the challenges of translation and offer readings
of poems by Tibetan authors depicted in the exhibition; and Tashi Dorji, a Bhutanese
guitarist who will perform original works in response to paintings in the show.
