Eric Morser

Eric Morser earned his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003 and has been at Skidmore since 2009. In 2011, he published his first book, Hinterland Dreams: The Political Economy of a Midwestern City with the University of Pennsylvania Press. The University of Massachusetts Press released his second book, The Fires of New England: A Story of Protestant and Rebellion in Antebellum America, in 2017. He teaches a range of courses related to the early American past as well as classes to explore the history of the American West, American Indians, environmental history, manhood in America, and the history of American radicalism.

At Skidmore, he has become increasingly interested in sharing the joys (and occasional frustrations!) of public history. In the fall semester of 2017, he worked with a number of faculty, staff, and students to bring a special exhibit that explored mass incarceration in America to the Tang Teaching Museum. As part of this project, he worked closely with students researching and documenting the rich history of Mount McGregor, a medium-security prison in Wilton that closed in 2014. He looks forward to helping other faculty members work on similar projects in the future.
