Retiree Perks
Have you already entered retirement? Make it as satisfying and secure as possible by reviewing all of the benefits available to you. Note that certain benefits are relevant to specific employee categories.
Privileges
If you had a Skidmore ID card while working at Skidmore, you may continue to use that card, including adding money to it so that you may use it on campus and at specified off campus sites like a debit card. You will also need a card if you plan to use the Scribner Library or the Sports Center. If you never had a card and need to get one, or if you have any questions, you can contact the Card Office located in Starbuck Center.
The Helpdesk staff are dedicated to assisting Skidmore community members with issues
related to technology. Members of that staff must allot their time wisely and will
try to assist retirees as best they can. In general, they must obviously prioritize
time to current employees and students, but they are always glad to be of assistance
where they can be.
Things the Helpdesk can do:
- Provide basic Help Desk support (login/account/password issues)
- Provide tip sheets for most common problems (e.g. setting up email on a mobile device or home computer, etc.)
- Provide general advice on buying a computer/software/hardware
Helpdesk staff will use what they call the “5 Minute” rule – if they can “fix” it in 5 minutes (or so), they will try. If it’s anything that looks to be time-consuming, they probably won’t be able to help and may refer retirees to off-campus computer stores that may be able to help.
Things the Helpdesk can’t do:
- Hardware support
- Major software support (e.g. Microsoft Word stopped working; I have a virus, etc.)
- After-hours support.
Note: The Helpdesk staff cannot be held responsible for something that goes wrong because they tried to help. It’s important for all to realize that staff members are making their best effort to fix the problem and not make anything worse, but not everything is in their control.
You may also want to consider enrolling in a Skidmore class for credit or sitting in as an auditor. You may do so on a space available basis, registering after the matriculated students have had an opportunity to make their course selections. The Registrar's Office provides assistance with this process. Some retiree accounts may be blocked from registering for classes online; if you encounter this problem, contact helpdesk@skidmore.edu; 518-580-5900.
Facilities
Browse thousands of books, DVDs, audio cassettes and more free of charge.
The library also has a specific collection of resources of interest to retirees.
Retirees remain able to access the Williamson Sports Center, which houses racquetball courts, a six-lane pool, an aerobics and fitness area, and much more.
Performances
Throughout the year Skidmore offers a rich array of events that are open to the public and especially inviting to retirees. Retirees have access to the same free or lower cost tickets offered to employees.
The Arthur Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College opened in 2010 as a hub of musical activity for the Skidmore College campus and surrounding communities. The 600-seat, acoustically tuned Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall, within Zankel, has drawn sold out crowds and featured performances by many internationally-renowned artists including:

- Havana Lyceum Orchestra
- Paul Simon
- Gloria Steinem
- The Ying Quartet
- NPR Radio Program's Selected Shorts and The Moth
The Dance Department annually produces two major concerts featuring work by full-time faculty as well as commissioned pieces and staged masterworks by internationally acclaimed guest artists, who in the past have included:
- Andrew Scordato: New York City Ballet
- Matt Pardo: “Top 100 Dancers in the World for 2010-2011" by Dance Europe Magazine
- Gino Grenek: Member of the original broadway cast of Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake
- Stephen Petronio: First male dancer of the Trisha Brown Dance Company
- Jared Angle: principal dancer, New York City Ballet
- Courtney Rottenberger: Radio City Rockette
