Hazard Communication Program

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, provides for both the employers and employees the right to know and right to understand the hazardous chemical that is known to be present in the workplace in such a manner that employees may be exposed under normal working conditions of use.

HAZCOM TRAINING

RESPONSIBILITIES

All applicable non-academic Departments are responsible for administering and compliance of the Hazard Communication Program.  Departments will:

  • Ensure that all containers are labeled appropriately.
  • Maintain an updated inventory of the chemicals in their work areas.
  • Maintain a file of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the departments hazardous chemicals and make available for employees.
  • Provide Hazard Communication training for your departments site specific hazards to all effected employees and maintain training records.
  • Identify and provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for employee use.

Employees are responsible for:

  • Compliance with the College's Hazard Communication Program.
  • Attending all Hazard Communication training session and department specific training sessions.
  • Understanding how to read chemical labels and SDSs.
  • Understanding and taking necessary precautions when handling hazardous chemicals.
  • Using the provided personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling chemicals.

HAZCOM TRAINING

This training is intended for all employees who work with hazardous chemicals in a non-laboratory setting, in order to recognize and understand the required elements of the College's Hazard Communication Program.

Refresher training is required every three (3) years within the department or by retaking this course.
