Summer Employment
Summer employment at Skidmore includes summer jobs for Skidmore students and temporary summer employees who are not Skidmore students. All summer hire requests must be approved before work begins, and hiring is managed through Human Resources and Oracle.
Summer 2026
Summer employment begins May 9, 2026. Summer 2026 dates are May 9, 2026, through September 8, 2026. Positions may begin posting on March 2, 2026. Supervisors who need positions posted or advertised should submit requisitions by that date. The student summer housing application period is March 2, 2026, through April 17, 2026. Supervisors may want to finalize student hires with this timeline in mind.
Effective January 1, 2026, the minimum wage is $16 per hour.
For summer employment questions, contact Jim Calhoun, employment coordinator, at extension 5802 or jcalhoun@skidmore.edu.
Students
Finding and applying for summer jobs
Students can search for summer jobs through Oracle in Okta. Go to Okta, select the Oracle tile, and then choose Current Jobs. Summer applications are accepted online only and are available to hiring departments immediately. Additional jobs may be added as they are approved. The summer jobs site is expected to be active during the first week of March.
After you are hired
If you are selected by a hiring supervisor, you will receive an email notification with your job offer. The offer will include employment dates, average hours per week, rate of pay, and related job information. Depending on the job, a background check may be required. If a background check is required, HireRight will send information to your Skidmore email address. Students must complete summer employment tasks and payroll-related information in Oracle Journeys before or on the first day of employment.
Working more than one summer job
Students may work more than one summer job at Skidmore if all positions are part-time, total hours do not exceed 40 hours in a workweek, and all jobs are paid the same way, either hourly or salaried. Students must tell their supervisors if they have more than one job.
Supervisors
Before you hire
All summer hire requests are subject to approval by each division’s vice president to confirm need and budget. All requests for summer workers must be approved before any work begins.
Please wait to hire until you are sure of the hire date and projected end date. Changing hire dates can become difficult after someone has been processed through Oracle.
When creating a job requisition, include the position start date and end date in the Comments section. Also note where the position should be advertised, if it is not internal only, or who you plan to hire if rehiring someone from the previous year with a waiver request.
Hiring a Skidmore student for summer
Hiring departments must complete a job requisition through the online recruitment module in Okta. This is the same process used for hiring students during the academic year, winter break, and summer.
When creating a student requisition, add “Summer SW-” in front of the business title. All students must apply online to the job posting. Once the hiring supervisor completes the online offer in Oracle, HR reviews and approves the information, and an automated email goes to the student and hiring supervisor.
Some student summer positions are eligible for on-campus housing. Supervisors should review summer student housing information and, where relevant, align hiring decisions with the student summer housing application period.
If a Skidmore student cannot accept a job because they need to stay on campus and cannot afford housing, a 70% housing subsidy may be offered. Meal subsidies are not allowed. Supervisors who wish to provide a housing subsidy should contact Patty Folts in Financial Services because billing information is required.
Supervisors should keep equity in mind when offering housing. If some students receive housing and others do not while earning the same rate of pay, that may create an equity concern. Supervisors with questions should contact Nancy Bruno.
Hiring a temporary summer employee who is not a Skidmore student
Hiring departments must complete a job requisition through the online recruitment module in Okta. Before starting the requisition, supervisors must contact Jim Calhoun, employment coordinator, to obtain the Position Control Number assigned to the summer position.
When filling out the requisition, choose Summer for the requisition type and include Summer in the requisition title. If filling a position that was previously created, supervisors may look up the old requisition and recreate a new requisition using the Position Control Number and previous requisition.
All hires must apply online to the job posting. Human Resources will create online offer letters in Oracle, and new hires will complete employment steps electronically.
Hourly employees are required to obtain a Skidmore email account unless their job requires them to swipe in and out at a time clock. Minors under age 18 must provide working papers, which can be obtained from the high school they attend.
Spring, summer, and fall job dates
The Spring semester ends May 8, 2026. Students hired for summer jobs may begin working as early as May 9, when summer pay rates begin.
If a student hired for the Spring continues working through Senior Week, they will keep the Spring pay rate through Commencement weekend. Starting May 18, the student must transition to a Summer job with the Summer rate of pay. This must be processed as a new hire into a Summer position, not an extension of the Spring job.
Hours worked through May 8, 2026, are charged to Student Work Study. Hours worked after May 8 are charged to the Temporary Non-Exempt Staff line.
For Fall semester hiring, use the student’s actual start date, even if that date falls during the summer, when the work is an extension of the academic year role. Hours worked outside academic semester dates are charged to the Temporary Non-Exempt Staff line. Hours worked within semester dates are charged to Student Work Study.
Background checks, onboarding, and payroll
Background checks may be required and are performed after the offer is accepted. If a background check is required, the hiring supervisor must tell potential hires during the interview process, and the background check must be completed before the employee’s start date.
Summer employment task information must be completed in Oracle Journeys before or on the first day of employment, regardless of appointment length. This includes the I-9 form, which should be completed on or before day one. If the I-9 is not completed by day three, the person hired must stop working.
Students and temporary summer employees are paid through the biweekly faculty/staff payroll system.
