Course Description

Learning From Games

Instructor(s): Leo Porter, Computer Science

What do games teach us about human learning? In this course, students will explore the educational value of traditional board and card games (e.g., Settlers of Catan and Blackjack) as well as modern video games (e.g., Civilization, Starcraft, and World of Warcraft). Games can teach us probabilities, basic economics, history, politics, tactics, strategy, etc. But beyond examining what individual games might teach us, we will investigate the medium of games themselves and how games relate to, and surpass in many ways, traditional learning environments. Throughout the course, students will learn how to become authors of video games themselves by learning how to program in Python and how to use Python video game libraries.
