Being myself and finding my home

Have you ever visited a place and just knew it felt right?

Hi! My name is Asia Quinones and I am from the Bronx in New York City. I was a Skidmore Pre-College student and couldn’t be more grateful.

I first learned about Skidmore College during my sophomore year of high school when I was applying to various summer programs. Fast forward through the application process and my (yay!) acceptance and it’s July and I’m on the road to Saratoga Springs.

This was my very first time away from home for such a long period of time in a new place with new people. As fearful as I was of the “new,” I simultaneously felt eager and enthusiastic about what opportunities and experiences laid ahead.

At first, I knew absolutely no one. But, I realized, neither did anyone else. I quickly made friends and after just one week, we felt like a family sitting around the table together at “D-Hall” (our dining hall) laughing and getting to know each other. Whether we were doing homework or exploring town together, or hanging out with our RAs (who are incredible), we had so much fun.

But aside from my new friends, the real benefit came from the courses. They taught me how to study and manage my time. Even better, the credit transferred and counted toward college, giving me a nice head start.

Pre-College truly taught me that you will find your group wherever you may go. And, as challenging as college classes can be, they are powerful and thought-provoking and you’ll rarely be bored.

In the end, we all find our home. I’m so happy Skidmore is mine and I’m now a sophomore here, studying psychology and taking steps toward my dream of being a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

Are you thinking of Skidmore Pre-College?

Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable, in your application and when you arrive. Everyone belongs here and the more authentic you are, the better.

If you are accepted, I would encourage you to attend, even if you may not want to go to Skidmore for college. Skidmore will help build your character not only academically, but genuinely as a person. No matter your path, this is an amazing first step.
