Getting the Story: A Workshop in Digital Audio Recording

This two-part workshop provides an introduction to the work of audio storytelling—the collecting, processing, and preserving of cherished stories using the latest digital equipment. In this workshop you will work with portable digital audio recorders and learn basic recording and interviewing techniques. On October 17, participants will learn and practice basic techniques. On November 7, participants will present an interview undertaken independently, and we will talk through lessons learned and next steps.
Whether you want to record family stories, use interviews in your research project or start a community oral history project, this workshop will get you off to a good start and touch on both technical and ethical aspects of interviewing.
What you need to bring: your ideas, paper and pencil/pen, comfortable shoes and a lot of enthusiasm
What is provided for use during the workshop: portable digital audio recording devices, headphones, microphones.
Interested? Email mdocs@skidmore.edu by October 3 introducing yourself (faculty, staff, student) and why this workshop is of interest. If more than 12 community members apply, the MDOCS Advisory Board will review the applications no later than October 10 to confirm participation.
About the Workshop Leader
Eileen McAdam, director and producer at the Sound and Story Project of the Hudson Valley, fell in love with sound recording about five years ago when she first put on a pair of headsets, held a microphone in her hand and pushed that little red record button. A whole new world opened up to her, and she has not stopped recording since. She began recording ambient sound and the stories of some of the old-timers in her rural town of Stone Ridge, New York. She learned how to do sound editing and production while producing personal audio profiles that she gave to families as gifts. The interest and gratitude that these gifts received propelled her to take her hobby to the next level by starting the Sound and Story Project.
