Skidmore prof to lead community discussion on immigration

November 26, 2013

The Community Cinema program of the Saratoga Springs Public Library will present a film and discussion on immigration issues related to the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 6:30–8:30 p.m. in the library's H. Dutcher Community Room. Leading the discussion will be Diana Barnes, visiting assistant professor of Spanish at Skidmore.

The event will begin with a screening of the The State of Arizona, a documentary produced and directed by Carlos Sandoval and Catherine Tambini. The film captures the explosive emotions and complex realities behind Arizona’s headline-grabbing struggle with illegal immigration. Examining Arizona’s controversial Senate Bill 1070, dubbed the “show me your papers” law, the film tells the stories of Arizonans on all sides of this divisive issue from ground zero of the nation’s immigration debate.

Barnes has done firsthand research and interviews along parts the nearly 2,000-mile border between the U.S. and Mexico. There, a combustible mix of U.S. immigration policy, poverty, and global economics has turned Mexican border cities into dangerous places to live and work. Barnes has spent time exploring the human side of this hot-button immigration issue, visiting towns on both sides of the border. In a related effort, she also works for the well-being of Latino workers at the Saratoga Race Course.

This film and discussion are free and open to the public. No registration is required.
