Basketball victorious in holiday week action

Women’s basketball rallied to a come-from-behind 77-67 overtime victory against Hamilton College Monday. Jordyn Wartts ’14 recorded a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds, Lindsey Davis ’15 scored 14 points and Molly McLaughlin ’15 contributed 14 points and 5 assists. The Thoroughbreds outscored the Continentals 15-2 over the final 2:42 of overtime, sealing the win by converting six of eight free throws in the last 34 seconds. Skidmore will host a pair of home games this week, taking on Williams College at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, and facing Middlebury College at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

Connor Merrill ’15 scored a career-high 32 points on 12-16 shooting and added 15 rebounds to lead men’s basketball past SUNY Potsdam 87-74, in Skidmore’s home opener last Tuesday night. Tanner Brooks ’16 contributed 20 points, nine assists, four rebounds and four steals, Aldin Medunjanin ’16 had 19 points and seven assists and Erik Sanders ’16 chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. The Thoroughbreds trailed 45-39 at halftime but bounced back with a 22-6 run in the second half to pull away from the Bears. Skidmore hosts Middlebury College at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

At Saturday’s games, Skidmore athletes will collect non-perishable food items for Skidmore Cares, the campus-wide community outreach initiative.

Men’s hockey battled back from a two-goal deficit to tie Buffalo State College in the championship game of the ninth annual Skidmore Invitational Sunday at the Saratoga City Rink. The Bengals won the shootout tiebreaker 1-0. The Thoroughbreds advanced to the final after beating Fitchburg State University 3-1, on Friday. Jack McDonald ’17 stopped 29 shots and Tony Giacin ’14 and Brad Schuler ’14 both had multi-point games. Giacin tallied a goal and an assist and Schuler notched two assists in the win. Aaron Beck ’14 netted his second goal is as many games in Sunday’s championship contest and a power-play goal by Phil Buonocore’s ’14 at 16:40 of the third helped secure a point for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds travel to Norwich University Friday, Dec. 6, for a 7 p.m. contest before taking on Saint Michael’s College at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. ~ By Dan St. Jacques
