At season's midpoint, women's basketball maintains Liberty lead

Women’s basketball continued to lead the way for Skidmore winter sports with a pair of wins, as all teams rolled past the midway point in their seasons. Ice hockey went unbeaten for the week, going 1-0-1 in a pair of ECAC East contests, while men’s basketball added a win against regional rival Union before having its six-game winning streak snapped by Hobart. Swimming and diving continued to prepare for the 2015 UNYSCSA Championships with a dual meet at RPI.

Women’s basketball improved to 7-0 in Liberty League play with wins over Union and William Smith. The team held the Dutchwomen to a season-low 35 points en route to a 49-35 victory Friday night. Molly McLaughlin ’15 led all players with 11 points and Kelly Donnelly ’18 added nine points and five rebounds. The Thoroughbreds (11-5, 7-0 Liberty League) tallied a team-record 18 three-pointers in Saturday’s 83-73 double overtime win against William Smith. Lindsey Davis ’16 scored nine of the team’s 12 points in the second overtime, hitting three three-pointers. Davis tied for a team-high with 18 points, going 6 for 17 from beyond the arc. McLaughlin was just shy of a triple-double producing 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and Angela Botiba ’15 contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds. The team plays at Vassar at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.

Ice hockey went undefeated over the weekend, battling to a 4-4 tie at Saint Anselm before downing New England College, 3-1. The team erased a two-goal deficit against the Hawks behind goals from Sam Bloom ’17, Mickey Foley ’18 and Marc Cibelli ’17. Christian Leahy ’18 gave the Thoroughbreds a 4-3 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining, but Saint Anselm responded two minutes later, sending the game to overtime where neither team could find the winning goal. Anthony Bird ’17 potted two goals against New England College and Jack McDonald ’17 made a season-high 42 saves to lead the team to a 3-1 win Saturday night. Cibelli added two assists and Ondrej Krajnak ’16 netted the game-winning goal 1:29 into the second period. The team hosts UMass Boston at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.

Aldin Medunjanin ’16 scored 20 points and added a game-high 12 rebounds and eight assists to lead men’s basketball to an 82-63 win at Union Friday night. Trailing 21-17 in the first half, the team roared back with a 20-0 run over a six-minute span to take a 37-21 lead and never looked back. Erik Sanders ’16 tied for a game-high with 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Connor Merrill ’15 tallied 14 points and Perun Kovacevic ’15 had 11 points and eight boards. The Thoroughbreds (9-6, 6-1 Liberty League) six-game winning streak was halted Saturday in a 70-63 loss against Hobart. The team held a three-point lead at halftime, but shot just 20 percent in the second frame as the Statesmen pulled away for a 70-63 win. Merrill had a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds, Sanders had 14 points and Medunjanin chipped in with 12 points.  The team goes on the road to take on Vassar at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both suffered setbacks in a dual meet at RPI. The men’s distance swimmers highlighted the meet with the top performances of the day. Nick Sauerbrunn ’15 swam to first in the 1000 Free, Gabriel Salitan-Alvarez ’17 touched in first in the 500 Free and Mario Hyman ’16 placed second in the 200 Free with a season-best time of 1:51.44.

Catherine King ’15 led the women’s team, finishing second in the 50 Free and third in the 500 Free. Yookee Roh ’16 added a second-place finish in the 50 Free, Monica Abdul-Chani ’17 was second in the 100 Back and Emily Przysinda ’15 came in second in the 500 Free.
