Thomas Caulfield of Global Foundries will present “Semiconductors: The Industry that Changed the World” as Skidmore’s 2017 Harder Lecture. His talk will address collaboration in the industry, his experiences and insights, and where the technology may be headed in future. The free public lecture takes place Monday, March 27, at 5 p.m. in Gannett Auditorium.

Caulfield is senior vice president and general manager of Global Foundries’ Fab 8—a new 300mm semiconductor wafer fabrication plant just outside Saratoga Springs—which GF says “supports customers on the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology platforms,” including 28, 20, and 14 nanometer. He joined the company in 2014, after presiding over Soraa, developer of solid-state lighting technology, as well as Ausra, provider of concentrated solar for electricity and industrial steam. Caulfield also spent 17 years at IBM, ultimately as VP of 300mm semiconductor operations for a state-of-the-art wafer fabrication facility. A St. Lawrence graduate, he holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Skidmore’s annual F. William Harder Lecture in Business Administration was endowed in 1985 by a Skidmore parent and longtime trustee. The talks bring together students and faculty with industry leaders to explore the current business environment and upcoming challenges.
