Course Description

Wealth and welfare: addressing inequality in london through finance and sustainability

Instructor(s): Ting Li, Management and Business

London, a global financial hub, is also a city marked by stark inequality, with the widest income gap in the UK. This first-year seminar provides an interdisciplinary exploration of inequality in London, examining its historical, economic, social, and financial dimensions. Students will trace the historical roots of poverty, investigate how economic systems perpetuate inequality, and analyze the social dynamics that sustain or challenge these disparities. Additionally, students will explore the role of sustainable finance - such as social impact bonds and green investments - in addressing inequality, fostering economic growth, and advancing long-term social and environmental sustainability. Through readings, discussions, case studies, and hands-on community-based projects, students will connect theoretical insights with practical applications, critically examining how finance intersects with broader societal forces to shape one of the world’s most dynamic yet divided cities.

Course Offered: 2026
