Mason Stokes

Mason Stokes teaches courses in African American literature and queer literature and theory. His writing ranges across genres and subjects, and includes The Color of Sex: Whiteness, Heterosexuality, and the Fictions of White Supremacy, a study of white-supremacist fiction and African American responses; Saving Julian, a novel about ex-gay conversion therapy; “Namesake,” a personal essay that was chosen by Jonathan Franzen for inclusion in The Best American Essays 2016; as well as numerous essays in academic journals.

Mason spends much of his time both in the classroom and on the page, thinking about the ways in which we make space for ourselves in relation to larger structural forces—in particular, whiteness and heterosexuality.
