Summer Employment 2015: What you need to know

January 30, 2015

Need a summer worker? As you consider filling your summer staffing needs, please review the information below.

Positions to be advertised will be posted on the Job Opportunities website beginning March 6, before students leave for spring break, so be sure to initiate the ATE no later than February 16.

Summer applications are accepted only online and will be available to the hiring departments immediately. Please keep the status of applications for your position updated in the online system. This will reduce phone inquiries and to allow those not hired to continue their job search.

One person in two summer jobs? In keeping with federal and state requirements, if an individual gets hired for two positions, both must be classified the same—for example, if a worker is hired into a non-exempt (hourly) position and into an exempt (salaried) position, the salaried position will need to switch to hourly so that hours and overtime can be properly tracked. If the exempt position can't become hourly, then the employee can't take a second position unless it is also exempt.

Two non-exempt positions can offer different hourly pay rates, as long as both provide at least minimum wage ($8.75 per hour). One of the two employers, usually the department that hires the individual for the second job, will be responsible for paying any overtime that the individual works.
