Will the Internet become orderly?

Will the Internet evolve toward a more orderly structure that is comparable to the publishing world? Are we merely witnessing the confusions of an adolescent technology that will mature into an orderly well-behaved adult?

The Internet will always remain far more chaotic than corresponding print worlds:

"The largest functional anarchy the world has ever known"

Or, as the Third Circuit Court wrote in declaring the Communication Decency Act unconstitutional:

The solution lies not in attempts to prevent the publication of web pages that have not been reviewed by some editorial board. The very structure of the current Internet is engineered to defeat all attempts at central control. The only workable solutions are:

  1. To develop academic portals that serve as online editors to collect the web resources that meet common standards for intellectual quality.

  2. User education to enable every individual to evaluate online information and identify those sites containing accurate information and informed criticism.
