Course Description

LatinX Expression: Color in Culture

Instructor(s): Fabian Lopez, Studio Art

We will explore the experience of the LatinX population within Los Angeles, California through the cultural lens of the arts. LatinX expression represents a geographically and ethnically diverse part of the world, comprised of a number of similar and contrasting nations and cultural regions throughout Latin America. Color plays a significant role in the identity of the LatinX culture. We will study color symbolism, the expressive aspects of color, and color interaction through lectures and hands-on art projects. In the LatinX experience, storytelling is a way of keeping the culture alive. We will explore oral history through conducting interviews, creating videos and writing. Through readings, discussions, and film viewings, we will study L. A. ’s evolving history to understand the context for the present LatinX community. Students will be developing art projects in this course and an art portfolio will be a major part of the grade.
