Study Abroad for Chemistry Majors

Yes, chemistry majors do have the opportunity and ability to study abroad!  Typically chemistry students choose to study abroad in the spring semester of their 3rd year, though it could be done in Fall of 3rd year, or Fall of 4th year.

In addition to working closely with your academic advisor to choose a program and courses that will work for you, students studying abroad or on an off-campus domestic program work through Skidmore’s Office of Off-Campus Study and Exchanges (OCSE).

The Chemistry Department currently approves the following programs:

IFSA Griffith University (Australia)
IFSA University of Melbourne (Australia)
Skidmore in London: Queen Mary, University of London
Skidmore in New Zealand

The following programs are also popular:
DIS - Study Abroad in Scandinavia
SIT Study Abroad/IHP Health and Community: Globalization, Culture, and Care

In addition to these programs, OCSE maintains a list of over 100 approved programs, which you can find on the OCSE search page

As part of the application process with OCSE you will have your chemistry courses reviewed by the Chair of the Chemistry department. You can also check the course-equivalency matrix to see which courses have previously been reviewed and approved for chemistry credit.

If you plan to study abroad, it is important to plan ahead and think carefully about your courses each semester at Skidmore.  You should work in consultation with your academic advisor to make sure you will have satisfied all requirements for your Skidmore chemistry degree of choice.  For example, please click below to see some example course schedules you might follow.
