Area of Expertise: Ceramics

Dawn Dishaw holds a BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Her work has been shown in ceramic galleries across the country including The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA, Akar in Iowa City, IA and Plough Gallery in Tifton, GA. She was one of Ceramic Monthly’s Emerging Artists in 2014. Dawn Dishaw has presented demonstrations of her work and taught classes at various studios including The University of Iowa, Wesleyan Potters and Saratoga Clay Arts. In 2019 Dawn established The Studio, an After School Art Program at the Round Lake School in Round Lake, NY.

Dawn’s ceramic work is about function and pattern. It is important for the pieces to be dynamic: to stand out in a world full of everyday objects but to also invite familiarity and intimate use. She is interested in the relationship between history, it’s grand traditions and our small everyday experiences. The patterns and floral designs on the surfaces of her work are influenced by an interest in symmetry and line and the organization of like pieces. Through the varying character of a hand drawn line, the repetition of shapes and the addition of bright colors, the comfortable forms become more energized; bringing everyday objects to the foreground.
