Matt Wilt, Associate Professor
Matt teaches all levels of ceramics at Skidmore, incorporating a broad-based, interdisciplinary approach to the material. He received his Bachelor's degree in Ceramics and Art Education from Penn State University and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University, Athens. Matt’s work in mixed media continues to integrate cast ceramic forms with wheel thrown and hand built elements. The objects and their related drawings often refer to the ceramic tradition of functional devices, but have become more visually ambiguous, while incorporating a variety of non-clay materials. The synthesis of the human, physical body with the mechanics of the manmade world continues to be a prevailing theme. Matt has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards. He has received two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Grants, an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, and the Evelyn Shapiro Foundation Fellowship. Matt’s artwork can be found in the collections of the Crocker Museum of Art in Sacramento, the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, Arizona State University’s Ceramic Research Center, the Hand Art Center of Stetson University, the Kennedy Museum of American Art, and numerous private collections. His work is exhibited and published nationally and internationally.
