ACCESS

BUILDING ACCESS

Saisselin Art Center has 24 hour secure access through a swipe card system
The following exterior doors will be unlocked at 7:00 AM and locked at 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday:

• Loading dock entrance
• First floor entrance adjacent to Ceramics and Fiber Arts
• Main west entrance from the covered walkway
• First floor east entrance by Filene

After 11:00 PM students must use their swipe cards to enter the building.

STUDIO ACCESS

Only those students currently registered in a course may have access to this studio, its tools and materials.  All others must receive individual permission from the Professor prior to using any tool or material within this facility.  For safety reasons, your friends, family, etc. cannot be permitted to remain in the studio when it is being used.

STUDIO SAFETY

Read and follow all Studio Safety Guidelines for the Department of Art posted in the hallways.

Smoking in all studios is expressly forbidden.

Never work in this studio if you are:

• Under the influence of any drug (including alcohol)
• Over-tired or distracted

JEWELRY & METALS STUDIO ACCESS

Due to the special nature of this studio it is prudent that some limitation on access be established for those hours when personal injury is most likely.  Therefore, all students are required to vacate the studio between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7:00 am. 

STUDIO AFTER HOURS

When using this studio after hours you should:

• Limit yourself to those processes which are least dangerous and least complex.
• Whenever possible, have at least one other metals student with you.  In the event of an emergency you may need someone to summon help.
• Be aware of any unusual people in the building/studio.  If you suspect trouble contact security immediately!
• Secure the studio before leaving:
  
  • CHECK THAT ALL TORCHES ARE OUT AND THAT ALL REGULATORS AND "MAINS" ARE OFF.
  • CHECK THAT ALL KILNS AND EXHAUST HOODS ARE OFF.
  • CHECK THAT ALL CHEMICALS ARE PROPERLY STORED AND THAT THE PICKLE POT IS OFF.
  • PUT AWAY ALL TOOLS AND DISCARD ALL TRASH.
  • ASSURE THAT ALL WINDOWS AND DOORS ARE LOCKED BEFORE TURNING OUT THE LIGHTS AND LEAVING.

MUSIC / AUDIO EQUIPMENT

The use of audio equipment (incl. radios, tape players, and "personal stereos") during any scheduled class meeting is not permitted.  The use of audio equipment during non-class hours will be tolerated only so long as the following conditions are met:

1. The volume must be kept at a reasonably low level.  For safety reasons "personal stereos" must also be kept at, or below, a volume level which permits normal conversation.
2. All persons using the studio must be in agreement as to the choice of music being played.  Music (or speech) which is apt to be found disagreeable or offensive should, of course, be avoided.  Any request to have the volume turned down, or off, must be respected.

Remember, for your safety you must not attempt any process, or use any tool, machine, or chemical until it has been thoroughly demonstrated to you by your instructor.  Remember too that this studio is not to be used between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 7:00 am.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

All students will share in the responsibilities of maintaining this facility, its tools and equipment.  The following represents the core of your responsibilities and obligations:

1. You are never to use a tool or piece of equipment until its safe and proper use has been thoroughly demonstrated to you by your instructor.
2. You are never to use a tool or piece of equipment in an unsafe manner or for any purpose other than its proper, intended function.
3. Under no circumstance is any tool or piece of equipment to be removed from this studio without prior consent from your instructor.
4. You are obligated to report any misuse or violation to your instructor immediately.
5. You must return all tools to their proper place as soon as you have finished using them.  Before leaving the studio you are to perform a general "clean-up" of all tools and materials (including trash) which others less responsible than yourself have left lying around.

STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES FOR SINK TRAPS

• Any waste products poured down the drain must be approved by Saratoga County Sewer and Water and city engineer.
• Only put approved substances down sink drains. Check with your professor to determine what is appropriate to put down sink.
• Saratoga Country Sewer and Water District authorities control and monitor what waste products can be poured down drains in order to keep water resources safe and sustainable.
