Departmental honors are awarded to a senior major who has maintained the required college and department grade averages and who, by the end of the first semester of the senior year, has filed with the department a Declaration of Intention to Qualify for Honors or who has enrolled in EN 389. In addition to the necessary grade averages, qualification requires work of exceptional merit in a Senior Seminar; or an Advanced Project; or in a Senior Thesis or Senior Project that will represent a culmination of the student's work in the major.

Effective for Class of 2017 and beyond:

To qualify for Departmental Honors in English, a senior must complete a capstone paper, project, or thesis of the appropriate length that merits a grade of A or A+.  In addition, the student must have a GPA of at least 3.5 in the major and 3.0 overall after no fewer than three semesters at Skidmore.  All work submitted for Honors consideration has a second reader.

The faculty member working with the student decides whether to recommend for Honors.  When a student is recommended for Honors, a second reader is selected by the Chair, in consultation with the faculty supervisor.
