Cuban Music Ensemble

This class will introduce you to the distinctive, dance-based rhythms of Afro-Cuban traditional music, as well to the evolution of Cuban dance music – from danzón, son, and bolero to cha-cha-chá, salsa, and timba.  We’ll create our own Cuban music ensemble to explore these rhythms and prepare specific pieces from the rich Cuban music repertoire.

Coached by Jorge Gomez, who grew up in Havana, Cuba.  He studied classical piano by day, and by night, Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban music, specializing in a form of Cuban music called timba – high-octane Cuban salsa infused with Latin Jazz harmonies, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and some of the instruments of American rock (drum kit and electric bass).
