| Required Texts: |
Gould & Whiteley, Virgil Aeneid Book
I |
| |
Fitzgerald, Aeneid of Vergil |
| Goals:
|
to review aspects of Latin grammar and syntax
| to build Latin vocabulary |
| to learn to read Latin
poetry, specifically Vergil's Aeneid |
| to understand the historical
and cultural contexts of Vergil's Aeneid |
| In order for us to have
a successful semester there will be some ground rules. Do not
write in your books. This practice encourages you to memorize
translations and not to learn the Latin. Also do not read a
written out translation. Make notes on vocabulary you do not
know or grammatical points you want to refer to but translate
from your Latin text. Attendance is critical in language classes.
Everyone must come to class every time and must be prepared
to translate. If everyone contributes in the classroom we will
be able to read Latin poetry and learn to appreciate Vergil's
style and use of language. |
