Skidmore Spotlight: Mary Monigan

April 24, 2019

Mary Monigan works as an editorial associate in the Office of Alumni Relations and College Events. She writes print and digital content, including alumni profiles for Scope Monthly and the annual Alumni Association Awards program, is the Class Notes editor for Scope magazine and manages the alumni Facebook account. She also manages a corps of 70 class correspondent volunteers.

Monigan joined Skidmore in 1996 as a University Without Walls program assistant. “I had learned about the uniqueness of the Skidmore community and I very much wanted to be a part of it,” she said.

One of her favorite campus events is Commencement. Monigan says she is always amazed at the depth of planning that goes into making it a special, personal experience for students and parents. “To this day, whenever the bagpipers start I get misty-eyed, especially if our student assistants are among the graduates,” she said.

She’ll need extra tissues this time around. Monigan will watch two international students from China, whom she has been working with for the past four years through the International Friendship Family Program, graduate in May.

All in all, Monigan loves that the Skidmore community is full of students, faculty and staff who love exploring ideas, making it an invigorating and fun environment to be in.

“Some of my favorite memories involve working with Professor Emerita Mary Lynn; I loved sharing lost nuggets of Skidmore history I came across while interviewing or researching our most senior alumnae with her. Her book, ‘Make No Small Plans,’ is still my go-to reference book,” Monigan said.

When not on campus, Monigan enjoys taking dance lessons, mostly in swing and Latin. A local history buff, she has volunteered with the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and plans to be a tour guide when she retires.
