Skidmore Spotlight: Chris Briggs

June 30, 2021

Chris Briggs, an area coordinator in the Office of Residential Life, oversees multiple residence halls and apartments, and works to recruit, select, train and supervise resident assistants (RAs). He helps the Office of Residential Life to foster a welcoming, safe and engaging residential community, creates programming, assists with housing operations such as move-in, move-out and room changes, and serves on an on-call rotation to respond to serious incidents and emergencies.

Briggs’ position involves living on campus so he can respond quickly to emergencies, staff offices in inclement weather and have a pulse on the residential experience.

“It also means my family and dog all live on campus with me and are also deeply connected to the Skidmore residential experience,” he said.

During the pandemic, many of Briggs’ responsibilities shifted online, and so he developed new approaches to counseling students, training and supervising RAs, and connecting with students. He was part of a student affairs committee focused on developing ways to keep students connected while remaining socially distant and safe. Briggs assumed a variety of additional responsibilities, including supporting students in quarantine.

Briggs began his job in August 2018 and said he appreciates the atmosphere at the College.

“I feel like I can get to know the students really well and that there is an openness to building a community. The culture of the Office of Residential Life encourages creativity in engaging students,” he said. “I also feel this is a special place to live as an area coordinator. The campus is gorgeous, the closeness to Saratoga Springs downtown is wonderful, and Sussman Village is a great place to raise a family.”

Since Briggs lives on campus, he also spends much of his free time there. He has a small garden and says the volleyball court in the Northwoods Apartments even serves as the family’s “beach.” Briggs also enjoys watching Marvel movies and shows, playing board games, slacklining and developing a new podcast about movies that he plans to release this fall.
