Beau BreslinBeau Breslin, professor of political science, published “Why the Preamble Matters,” as part of “The Democracy Constitution,” a symposium by Democracy: A Journal of Ideas to draft a new constitution.  

Kris CoveyA project led by Kris Covey, assistant professor of environment studies and sciences, and Bruno Basso of Michigan State University has been named a winner of the Morgan Stanley Sustainable Solutions Collaborative. A $250,000 award will support MySOC, which is harnessing diverse data types to answer foundational questions about soil carbon and create a new market in partnership with farmers committed to sustainability. Covey has also been invited to participate in the “Food and Ag Data Innovation Conservation and Climate Change” workshop series hosted by the Meridian Institute in June and July. He discussed his research in a Voice of America (VOA) Russian broadcast that appeared on Current Time TV, a 24-hour television network produced by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) in cooperation with VOA.

Kate Graney

Kate Graney, professor of political science, was keynote speaker for the panel “30 Years On: The Legacy of the Post-Soviet Transformation and the Future of Democracy.” Graney discussed her 2019 book, “Russia, the Former Soviet Republics, and Europe Since 1989: Transformation and Tragedy.” The panel was sponsored by the New Eastern Europe center in Krakow, Poland, and included participants from Ukraine, Germany and Georgia.

Jeff SegraveJeffrey Segrave, professor of health and human physiological sciences and chair of the Department of Music, published “The Wonderful World of Quidditch: An Innovative Model of Gender Inclusivity” in “Social Innovation in Sport” edited by Anne Tjønndal and published by Palgrave Macmillan. 

Kurt SmemoKurt Smemo, associate professor and associate director of the Environmental Studies and Sciences Program, is lead author on the scientific paper “Temporal soil enzyme patterns provide new insights into the nutrient economy of acidic hardwood forests,” which was published in the journal Biogeochemistry. 

Masami TamagawaMasami Tamagawa, senior teaching professor of Japanese, was interviewed for the article “Reflections on Pride: Bringing Pride to the LGBTQ+ community in Japan,” part of Springer Nature’s Pride 2021 Campaign. He also participated in the online panel discussion “Advancing Pride: The Road Ahead to Empower Asia’s LGBTQ Communities,” organized by the Wilson Center in Washington.
