Kris CoveyKristofer Covey, assistant professor of environmental studies and sciences, has received several gifts and awards totaling $50,000 to support student research experiences related to The Soil Inventory Project (TSIP). A gift of more than $20,000 will support two student summer research/internship experiences on Al Gore’s Caney Fork Farm ($20,935). Separate funding from Bedford2030 ($3,500) supports TSIP-related teaching and research. A third gift from a private donor ($25,600) will fund three summer research/internship experiences for students on the G-C Ranch, and on other ranches associated with the Texas Agland Trust, The Noble Research Institute, and the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute.

Jordana Dym, professor of history, organized workshops on transnational history for the Atelier d'Etudes Transnationales at the University Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 on April 1 and at the University of Bordeaux, "Teaching with maps in and of the Americas: past and present of a pedagogical tool, April 5-6.

Heather HurstHeather Hurst, associate professor of anthropology, is a lead author on the article “An early Maya calendar record from San Bartolo, Guatemala,” which presents evidence for the earliest known calendar notation from the Maya region, in Science Advances. In addition, she has received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Archaeological and Ethnographic Field Research program to continue her work at San Bartolo from 2022 to 2025. The award, titled “Murals in Landscape: An investigation of human-nature relationships in Maya myths and design at San Bartolo, Guatemala,” will combine GIS, archaeology, and community participation to investigate a newly discovered road system and landscape shrines within the framework of cosmologies represented in the murals. Hurst has also been invited to deliver the Distinguished Lecture in Art of the Ancient Americas at Johns Hopkins University later this month.  

Regina JanesRegina Janes, professor emeritus of English, has been awarded the Louis Round Wilson Prize for her article “Lemuel Gulliver, Map-maker,” as the best article in Studies in Philology for 2021. 

Trish LyellTrish Lyell, teaching professor and assistant director of the Schick Art Gallery, spoke to The Daily Gazette about the new “Humor Me” exhibit at the Schick. 

 

Rachel Mann RosanRachel Mann-Rosan, senior teaching professor of psychology, brought students from her developmental disabilities and autism class to help operate youth activities at the 10th annual Autism Expo & Art Exhibit in Saratoga Springs. She was quoted by The Saratogian about the experience.  

Mark MillerMark Miller, director of Dining Services, spoke to the Times Union about Skidmore’s dining culture and approach, including a $14 million renovation of the campus dining hall, individualized food stations, a focus on accommodating a variety of dietary needs, and a real-time serving model that helps to reduce food waste.  

Michael MarxDan NathanDaniel A. Nathan, professor of American studies, and Michael Marx, professor of English, were part of an April 10 panel on Yiddish cinema sponsored by the Saratoga Jewish Community Arts.
