'This Chance Together'

by Randy Emmanuel Castillo ’15

This Chance Together

Chances hear
A whisper
A repetition
The same stories
That weight
Say wait
Hold on

The past has got
A reckoning
A you owe
For the time
You didn’t
Know better

A holler
A his
Mistakes
Were set
In stone

He had
A moment
An opening
In a crowded
Place

To leap
Right there
Right in front of him
A place for reaching

He reached alone

Reached with hands
That weren’t sure
Hands that weren’t confident to grab
What is ours for the taking
He reached with questions
Questioned the miracle of his hands
Didn’t know
To prevent
The tripping over
The rock
He stumbles on
In his head
The day he is supposed to
To speak first
To see the person
With the future he’s been looking for
Some days we’ve been longing for

See a we can’t
Because she said you’re only an 8 out of 10
You’re a hood dude
You’re the type that walked barefoot
Mismatched socks
Wore the same shirt

At times not even on purpose

Second chances got
A giant weight to carry
A giant wait
A giant hold on
You can’t go there anymore
You can’t reach that place
Says a small choice I once made

Or so they say

Chances
Especially second ones
Exist
Small miniscule
30 seconds
To write
To speak
To make
The difference
Chances didn’t see the herd coming
The presence of this group

We’re here
We’re more than our past
More than the stories we tell ourselves
We’re ideas

Feel our connection
The cold winter days
We worked through together
Our realization
Of a better we didn’t see yesterday
Our yea you’re right
I probably won’t walk that way anymore But
I’m glad I did otherwise I wouldn’t be here

Chances didn’t see this herd
This collective confidence
Placing the oh this is happening in our step
The we’re going to make this happen We’re
going to get there
The there is no maybe
Not for this goodness
This possibility is not
A negotiation

This one has got a team for that
For this chance
For this moment

Here I am
Here is what I have
What we have
Brought together
