What to do if I have COVID-19, flu, or something like it?
No matter the cause, if you’re experiencing cold, flu- or COVID-like symptoms, here’s what to do next.
When to stay home | Absences from class | Meals | Returning to physical activity
WHEN TO STAY HOME
If you have any type of respiratory illness or symptoms, even if your COVID-19 and flu tests are negative, it is important to follow current recommendations:
- Remain home until you have been fever-free (temperature less than 100.4 F or 38 C) for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications (ex: ibuprofen, acetaminophen)*
- Once you return to class and other activities, continue to mask around others indoors for at least 5 days
- Frequent hand washing with soap and water for 20 seconds
* If you do not have a fever but feel very ill, stay home until you start to feel some improvement.
For more details, recommendations and scenarios check the CDC’s Preventing Spread of Respiratory Viruses When You're Sick.
ABSENCES FROM CLASS
If you are sick and need to miss class, notify your faculty members as soon as possible and before missing class to develop a plan for how to make up missed work. Health Services does not provide documentation for student medical illness or injury. Please refer to our policy for more details.
MEALS
If you are sick and on the dining plan, you (or a friend on your behalf) may take food out of the dining hall to eat away from others and help prevent the spread of illness. Follow instructions on this form: Procedures from removing meals from Dining Hall form.
RETURNING TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & ATHLETES
After any illness, return to physical activity should be gradual. Begin with a shorter, less intense activity then increase duration/intensity every 24 hours so long as you are feeling well. Stop if you develop symptoms during activity and schedule an appointment.
- Example: Start with a long walk. If feeling well with walking, the next day try a light jog, then the following day jog faster/longer, etc.
Schedule an appointment in Health Services if you have any questions or concerns.
NCAA athletes should consult their athletic trainer for discussion about precautions and return to play. At this time there is no Heath Services visit or clearance required to return to participation after COVID-19 or flu.
