Lawrence Shuster received his doctorate in Music Theory from the City University of New York Graduate Center with a dissertation entitled "Transformational Harmony and Voice-Leading: Analytical Applications and Methodological Extensions of Klumpenhouwer Network Theory" completed under the supervision of Philip Lambert.

He has previously taught at the Contemporary Institute of Music in Beijing, China; Brooklyn College (CUNY); Hunter College (CUNY); the University of Georgia, Athens; and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has presented papers at various international, national and regional conferences and his research interests include theories of musical transformation; theories of musical time; analysis of world music; and jazz theory and analysis.

In addition, he is co-organizer of the First and Second International Conference on Analytical Approaches to World Music (AAWM 2010; AAWM 2012) and is also the founding editor of the online journal Analytical Approaches to World Music (AAWMJournal.com). In addition to activities as a music theorist, he is also active as an electric bassist and performs with his quartet Slimbo throughout the northeast and abroad.
