Though your intellectual foundation will come mostly from the classroom, lab, and library, it makes sense to test your new knowledge and skills in real-world environments. That's why Skidmore encourages students to take advantage of its numerous academic and career exploration offerings, which include faculty-student collaborative research, internships, service-learning courses, off-campus study, and independents, capstones, and theses.

In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, it is crucial to be able to understand and communicate effectively across different cultures, identities, and perspectives. In the past decade, Skidmore's percentage of domestic students of color nearly doubled, from 12% to 22%; the percentage of international students rocketed from 1% to 9%, with another 7% holding dual passports; and 13% of students are first-generation collegians. Currently, students hail from 45 states and 60 countries. This generation wants to connect across all sorts of boundaries, and Skidmore's strong ethos of pluralism makes that happen.

Our founder, Lucy Skidmore Scribner, believed in putting academic theory and creative expression into practice. She called it educating "the mind and the hand." Today we call it "Creative Thought Matters." As we state in our Goals for Student Learning and Development, the Skidmore experience is about cultivating in students the kind of mind that understands and appreciates how creative thought matters in all pursuits. That's our mantra, our motto, our core, and the world is desperate for it.
