Build creative confidence at "Design Thinking" workshop
Are you ready to have some of your comfort zones challenged? If so, you’ll be glad you attended the half-day workshop taking place this Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery.
Geared especially to students who are interested in some day starting their own businesses, “Design Thinking: Ideation Team-Building” aims to “foster creative confidence and push students beyond the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines,” says Catherine Hill, F. William Harder Professor of Business Administration and organizer of the event.
Students in all majors are encouraged to attend. The free workshop will run from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. No pre-registration is necessary.
"Design thinking is nothing more than brainstorming in a highly structured fashion," says Hill. "It's a methodology for producing reliably innovative results in any field."
Through a series of exercises, Hill will use techniques from her own classroom to brainstorm ideas and refine business plans.
One session will take participants through a highly structured process in which two partners interview each other and - using such raw materials as construction paper, pipe cleaners, tape, and markers - create a “perfect gift” for the other. Another will explore concepts of brand by examining various works of art at the Tang. A third will feature a panel of entrepreneurs on the subject of networking.
The program is the first in a “Startup Series” sponsored by Accelerate518, a consortium of colleges and universities in the Capital Region dedicated to the teaching of entrepreneurship. Students and faculty from around the region will attend, making the workshop a great opportunity to network with creative people at other institutions.
