Skidmore Career Advisor, Maya Nussenzweig '13

Skidmore's Career Advisor Network is a Skidmore-exclusive database made up of alumni and parents connected with the college.  These mentors are eager to share their career experiences and advice with Skidmore students.

Career Counselor Shannon Rodriguez, who manages the clinical and biomedical sciences career community, recently spoke with Maya Nussenzweig '13, a project coordinator for the Institute for Family Health.

Maya majored in psychology during her time at Skidmore.

Shannon:  It's been a great experience seeing you grow from a student to a successful alumna and career advisor.  Why is it important for you to be part of the Career Advisor Network?

Maya:  The Skidmore faculty and students have guided and supported me since my first day on campus. From being a naive first year student to becoming a confident graduate, our alumni’s guidance has given me these invaluable resources: friendship, education, and networking skills to become who I am now. By gaining these tools, I wish to pass them on to the next generation.

Shannon: Why should Skidmore students interested in public health reach out to you?

Maya:  Istarted my career working in the public health sector post- graduation. In five years, I have held an array of challenging and rewarding roles that landed me in cities like New York, Boston and Washington DC. These positions currently lead me to now manage a Naloxone distribution program for the Institute for Family Health in New York City.  Through these adventures and moves, I can speak to adjusting to life in a new city and how there will be bumps in the road both professionally and personally. Overall, it is vital to understand how these happenings are all steps that will eventually lead you to the right direction. I have found that life is how we choose to enjoy our journey regardless of disappointment.

Students should also know that I am a “connector”. I love networking and pride myself on wanting to bond and engage with all types of people from various creeds and backgrounds. It is through these introductions and interactions that I enjoy linking others to one another and allowing them to grow and develop business relationships and/or friendships. Through my experience and willingness to be open, I believe that this makes me a valuable addition to students wishing to pursue a career in public health.

Shannon: What is a piece of career advice you often share with students?

Maya: Find a mentor!  They are and can be instrumental to career growth. Mentors are the people who will challenge you, who will respect you, who will keep you motivated in tough times, and who will celebrate your successes big and small along the way. They come in many shapes and forms and they often can be found when we least expect it.
