Skidmore Career Advisor, Marisa McCullough '13

Skidmore's Career Advisor Network is a Skidmore-exclusive database made up of alumni and parents connected with the college.  These mentors are eager to share their career experiences and advice with Skidmore students.

Kim Crabbe, who advises students within the Business & Finance career community, caught up with Career Advisor, Marisa McCullough '13, a mathematics major and dance minor who today works as a technical architect at UBS.  Along with consulting and finance, Marisa also advises students concerning technology careers.

Kim:  Marisa, it's  great to check in with you, and thanks for being a career advisor with us.   Since graduating from Skidmore, you've advanced in your career while working for Northwestern Mutual, JP Morgan Chase and now UBS.  You've credited networking as a key part of your success.  Can you share more about this?

Marisa: I always thought working was about work and nothing but work - such as the hours you put in on the desk, the output you produce, and the speed and diligence at which you could get something done. But a wise mentor of mine gave me a piece of advice that changed my mindset, for the better, and ultimately catapulted my career.

He said: “Getting coffee with someone IS part of working.” To translate, networking is just as important, if not more than, as your day to day work is and it’s encouraged to take time away from the desk to do so. Connections made with peers, superiors, and mentees are invaluable and I am where I am today as a result of not only my work, but also the people I took the time to “get a coffee” and connect with.

Students who are interested in consulting, finance, and/or technology are encouraged to reach out to Marisa for advice.  Thank you to Marisa and all of our awesome career advisors!  If you're a Skidmore alumnus or parent and wish to serve as an advisor, please request an account here
