Skidmore to Host First Discrete Mathematics Conference of Academic Year
Skidmore will host the first Discrete Mathematics Day Conference of the academic year
from 9 a.m. to 5:10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, in Davis Auditorium of Palamountain Hall.
The location has been changed from Emerson Auditorium to accommodate a larger expected
attendance.
Between 60 and 70 participants are expected at the event, which will feature the
following guest speakers: Karen Collins, Wesleyan University; Ellen Gethner, University
of Colorado, Denver; Bruce Richter, University of Waterloo; Lauren Rose, Bard College;
and Herb Wilf, University of Pennsylvania.
The conference is part of a series that has run for a decade and most recently carried
the name Discrete Math Days in New England. Past conferences have taken place at the
University at Albany, State University of New York; the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst; Dartmouth College; and Bard College. The next event in the current series
is scheduled Nov. 11 at Holy Cross.
According to Professor of Mathematics Alice Dean, who is coordinating the Skidmore
event, "The purpose of the conference series is to bring together mathematicians and
computer scientists who work in various areas of discrete math, enabling them to meet
one another and possibly initiate or work on collaborative research projects, and
to hear reports of current research from several such scholars."
She continued, "The conferences also try to expose students, both undergraduate and
graduate, to the research arena, permitting them to see researchers at work, to meet
potential collaborators or mentors, and to learn some of what is being done currently
in the various subfields of discrete mathematics."
The conference series is supported by a grant from the National Security Agency and
the host institution. There is no fee to register and registration is open to all
interested students and faculty. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided
to all attending. Pre-registration is required and may be made by emailing Dean at
adean@skidmore.edu.
