FOSA's 2010 tourney scores an ace

July 7, 2010

Skidmore's sixth annual Thoroughbred Cup golf and tennis tournament took place in Saratoga Springs on June 26, and once again it was a fantastic event. The 100 golfers and 20 tennis players enjoyed competitive play and camaraderie. For the first time, the golf tourney was held at the Saratoga Spa Championship Course; tennis was held once again on the Skidmore College courts. Afterwards all convened for a festive dinner at Skidmore's Murray-Aikens dining hall, again a first for the tournament.

The Thoroughbred Cup, one of two major athletics fundraisers at Skidmore, raised close to $35,000 this year, to improve the quality of the athletics experience for our student-athletes. In addition to coordinating the Skidmore Athletics Hall of Fame and various alumni-athlete outreach events, FOSA also provides the fundraising framework through which donors can support the overall athletics program, intramural sports activities, fitness and recreation programming, and individual athletic teams. Skidmore is committed to developing character, leadership, and teamwork in student-athletes so they can excel in the classroom, on the playing field, and, most importantly, in life.

After the day's athletic activity, Director of Athletics Gail Cummings-Danson welcomed the group and President Philip Glotzbach announced the Hall of Fame inductees to be honored at the upcoming FOSA Benefit and Hall of Fame event on September 25. Steve Sullivan '78 was named the 2010 FOSA MVP, for his generous support of the Friends of Skidmore Athletics. Winners of the Thoroughbred Cup for tennis were Prof. Flagg Taylor and Danielle Fanscher '10; the golf winners were David Bakyta '89, Jordan Albaneese, Andy Rathbun, and Sal Porterfield. The grand-prize raffle winner was John Chaplin.

Special thanks to the 2010 committee chairs Dawn Penniston Murray '03, Brian Clark '02, and Steve Yale '81 and their committee members, for their tireless efforts to make this event a smashing success.
