Update on the organization of the Office of Special Programs
Following an external review of the programs and initiatives of the Office of Special
Programs and a subsequent evaluation of its administrative structure, the President’s Cabinet has decided not to replace the position of Dean of Special
Programs. However, the current organization of the Office, consisting principally of two separate teams — Operations & Conferences; and Academic Programs, Residencies, Institutes, & Community
Programs — will be retained.
The review and evaluation, which began before the retirement of Dean of Special Programs
Paul Calhoun last August, noted that the discontinuation of the University Without
Walls program and the phasing out of the Master of Liberal Arts Studies program had
impacted the scope of Special Programs by eliminating its only degree-granting programs.
At the same time, the external review concluded that Special Programs “mak[es] an extraordinarily positive contribution to Skidmore’s educational mission, differentiating
the campus as a vibrant arts and educational destination.”
The evaluation of the administrative structure of the Office led to the conclusion
that academic-related programs should remain under Academic Affairs, while non-academic
operations could be more closely aligned with the Finance and Administration division.
Auden Thomas will continue to lead Academic Programs, Residencies, Institutes, & Community
Programs, and Wendy LeBlanc will remain head of Operations & Conferences. During the
summer months, Shelley Joyce, the managing director of the Arthur Zankel Music Center,
will report to Academic Affairs.
The distinctive mission of Special Programs, with its commitment to offering innovative
educational and cultural experiences that enhance the reputation of the College, while
also hosting revenue-producing outside conferences and events, will be sustained.
And, except for the Project on Restorative Justice — which is relocating to the University of San Diego this summer — all signature programs will continue to be offered.
In alignment with the core purpose of each of the units, the Office will report on
an interim basis during the summer and into the fall to both Michael Orr, dean of
the faculty and vice president for academic affairs, and Donna Ng, vice president
for finance and administration and treasurer. During this period, opportunities for integration and collaboration with other divisions and offices of
the College will be explored.
