Celebrating five years of African Heritage Awareness Club

This year marks the African Heritage Awareness Club’s fifth year on campus.

The club strives to increase awareness of African and diaspora cultural practices on campus and in the Saratoga Springs community through events, talks, performances, workshops and more.

The club now has more than 100 student members, who recently celebrated the club's fifth anniversary at the annual fall AHA Gala in Murray-Aikins Dining Hall.

Haja Isatu Bah ’21, AHA president, says the event, “reflects the diversity of the African continent and how open we are to welcome people from all over the world.”

“We are here to create awareness about ongoing issues in Africa, educate people about the beauty and diversity of the continent, and — most importantly — foster a community for all to feel welcome, learn comfortably and contribute toward the club’s development.”

A reflection of its inclusiveness and appreciation for its many members, the theme of this year’s gala was "Ubuntu: I am because we are."

Attendees included Skidmore College President Philip A. Glotzbach, Marie Glotzbach, students, staff, faculty, alumni and friendship families, as well as students from other schools.

Attendees enjoyed homemade African food, watched dances and viewed outfits that proudly displayed different cultures.

AHA meetings are open to all members of the Skidmore community.
