Ken Sider began his teaching career with brief stints in the U.S. Job Corps system and New York City public schools but was a devoted teacher in rural public elementary schools in Upstate New York. As an elementary school teacher, his classroom was a space for liberatory pedagogy through experiential learning, student-initiated social justice campaigns, projects to promote social responsibility, thematic instruction, arts-integration, artist residencies, community collaborations, disability awareness and advocacy, and democratic classroom principles.

Dr. Sider served as a lecturer at Hartwick College (1 year) and SUNY Oneonta (18 years) where he taught courses in foundations, philosophy, diversity and inclusion, critical literacy, and social studies. He has been awarded 12 artist residency grants from the NYS Council on the Arts, 3 foundation grants to fund drumming in the elementary classroom, and the NY African Studies Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Sider’s work has been featured in various media including the Washington Post, National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and The Academic Minute, The Asia Society, The Beacon Center (a NSF organization), CBS Evening News, Parent Today (Capital District BOCES magazine), On Board (NYS School Board Association’s magazine), education journals, several edited collections, and books by other authors.
