Tragedy in Japan

March 14, 2011
by Acting President Susan Kress

Dear Members of the Skidmore Community,

Most of you are aware of the tragic events unfolding in Japan in the wake of the powerful earthquake and tsunami that struck on Friday. The loss of life, the widespread devastation, and the growing nuclear emergency are truly overwhelming.

We have been actively reaching out to members of our extended community (faculty, students, alumni, and parents), whom we believe to be in Japan, to ensure that all are safe and unharmed. We are also staying in close touch with members of our community with connections to Japan. Thus far, we have received no reports of injuries or loss of life, although several individuals have been deeply affected by the human tragedy, the extensive damage, and the accompanying disruptions to daily life.

We will continue to monitor the situation and report to you as appropriate. In addition, Associate Dean of Student Affairs David Karp is coordinating plans for events in support of those who have lost their lives and the survivors who will need to rebuild their lives and their communities. Please direct any questions to him (dkarp@skidmore.edu; ext. 5779).

These are the moments when we are reminded that we are all part of a global community. Our hearts and thoughts go out not only to those in the Skidmore community who are most directly affected but to all those in the devastated areas.

Sincerely,

Susan Kress
Acting President
