About History

History is a way by which we understand who we are as human beings. The department's mission is to impart in our students a solid knowledge of the past and to develop in them ways of thinking to make sense of patterns of change in civilizations and cultures. We want you to read news articles with context to understand their importance. We want you to make career and life decisions with an understanding of the moral and political issues at stake. Our promise is to help you gain the "historical literacy" you need to think critically about the world in which you live.

Beyond the Classroom

Proximity to one of the Revolutionary War's most important battlefields, as well as the New York State Museum and archives in nearby Albany, New York’s state capital, make Skidmore a great place to engage in historical research.

Recent faculty-student research projects: Using Skidmore's GIS lab to make maps recreating the political setting of a New Hampshire county in the 1830s; traveling to Mexico with a professor to meet with scholars and do research about cultural identity at the country's national archives; and studying the impact of botany practices in 17th-century Europe.

Recent internships:
Directing a six-week youth internship program for 20 high school students; cataloging an 18th- and 19th-century tools collection for a historical society exhibit; and conducting Revolutionary War-related research with the Saratoga National Historical Park. (For a listing of potential internships, see here.)

Popular study abroad programs: Skidmore in Spain: Madrid and Alcala; API Lorenzo de Medici, Florence (Italy);
and Skidmore in London: University College London (England)
