Professor Hurwitz teaches mathematics courses in the department, and has done so here since 1976. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, and his research area is combinatorial group theory. More recently, he has branched out into teaching and research that includes topics in the history of mathematics, probability and statistics, geometry, and mathematics education. His work today, both theoretical and pedagogical, which is connected to the study of patterns and symmetry, draws on several of these different areas. In the area of mathematics education, he has served as a consultant for several area school systems, taught for several years in the MA for teachers program at RPI, and teaches Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers in Skidmore’s Education Department. Since 2000, Professor Hurwitz’ “Mathacrostic” puzzles have been published in each issue of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal, the official publication of the National Honorary Mathematics Society.
