About Social Work

Skidmore is one of the few top liberal arts colleges with a social work program, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education at the baccalaureate level since 1983. As a major, you will receive excellent preparation for both beginning-level generalist social work practice and graduate study. Our curriculum integrates knowledge of human behavior, social welfare policy and services, and research, with the values and skills of the social work profession. Significant hands-on work with the broader community is integrated into the coursework, especially during field placement. Ultimately, we expect our graduates to help empower needy people and groups so that their lives can be enhanced.

Interesting Classes I Might Take

  • Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare
  • Social Work Values and Populations at Risk
  • Human Behavior and the Social Environment
  • Introduction to American Government
  • Introduction to Macroeconomics

Beyond the Classroom

Video: The Pro Arts Club Paints a Mural for Children of Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Center for the Family's Child Advocacy Center provides counseling and other services to families and children. After a fire, the center was rebuilt but still needed some finishing touches. Rene Alpert, a Skidmore social work and psychology major interning at the center, reached out to the student Pro Arts club, which volunteered to paint a new mural.

Service-learning volunteer placements as part of courses such as the Saratoga Economic Opportunity Council’s food pantry, Shelters of Saratoga, the Adult and Senior Center of Saratoga, and Saratoga Bridges, where students have created and lead a grief group.

Internships with organizations such as the nonprofit Backstretch Employee Service Team at the Saratoga Race Course; Covenant House International Headquarters (NYC), which provides shelters for homeless youth throughout the Western Hemisphere; the Brooklyn Defender Service; and the Refugee Youth Summer Academy, run by the International Rescue Committee.

Recent field placements: Gordon Creek Elementary School, Waterford-Halfmoon Elementary School, Adult and Senior Center of Saratoga, BOCES, St. Peter's Addiction Recovery Center, Baywood Center, Shelters of Saratoga (SOS), Family Planning Advocates of New York State, Charlton School
