100 ways to be involved

September 12, 2016

Skidmore students are known to be creative and curious, best exemplified by the breadth of clubs on campus. With over 100 student-founded organizations, there’s one suited for every interest. From Quidditch Club and the Animal Alliance to the Photography Club and acapella, these organizations break the barriers of academic interest and allow students to pursue their passions or pick up a new hobby. At the beginning of each fall semester, tables line the walkway behind Case Center and spill out onto Case Green, providing information to those passing by. Student Government Association Vice President Kira Geary ’18 toured the traditional event using Snapchat, showcasing the unique opportunities Skidmore has to offer students outside of the classroom, and also provided her perspective on clubs at Skidmore.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m Kira Geary from Somerset, Pa. I’m a political science major, class of 2018.

What are you involved in on campus?

I’m primarily focused on SGA this semester, but I’m also involved in the Theater Department doing technical theater. I’ve helped build sets and was an assistant stage manager for the department’s production of Macbeth

What club would you join if you had the time?

If I had the time I would definitely want to be more involved in Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood. They’re a really active club on campus that does amazing stuff, and if I had the time I’d love to be a part of it.

What do you think is the most creative club at Skidmore?

We have such a variety of clubs on campus that it’s hard to decide! One club that first seemed very creative to me when I got to Skidmore was FeelGood. They make grilled cheeses every week and sell them in Case Center to raise money for charity. New clubs are popping up all the time. Last semester we chartered clubs ranging from the Fly Fishing Club to the Tabletop Gaming Club to Peace Action, which focuses on advocating for nonviolence in foreign policy. There’s a club for just about anyone at Skidmore!

Why do you think clubs are important?

Clubs are so important to creating a vibrant community at Skidmore. I think clubs are an especially great way for first-year students to find other people in the Skidmore community who are passionate about the same things as them. They provide a sense of belonging within the club but are also responsible for most of the events that happen on campus, so not only are they a great way to make new friends with similar interests, but clubs also are engaging the rest of the campus about what they’re passionate about too. Clubs are what make Skidmore more than just a place to take classes and make it a place where people feel at home and like they are part of a community.
