Skidmore launches Election 2020 webpage

September 30, 2020

As the November general election draws near, Skidmore College has launched a new Election 2020 webpage to serve as a central hub for all election-related programming supported by the College and provide resources for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community who wish to learn more about how they can actively participate in the political process this election year.

As a strong proponent of civic engagement, Skidmore encourages all members of the campus community and beyond to exercise their constitutional rights to vote, assemble and freely express their views and opinions. A full slate of College-sponsored programming will keep the community informed and facilitate many opportunities for the types of meaningful and respectful dialogue that are essential to the democratic process.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic presents a number of challenges this election season, Skidmore President Marc C. Conner notes that there are also advantages to hosting events and resources online, thus providing more access than ever before.

“The new website is a gathering place for anyone and everyone who wants to really engage in what will be a historic election by any measure,” said President Conner. “It benefits the Skidmore community and our neighbors, who have a unique opportunity to avail themselves of much of our programming due to the virtual format.”

Online events range from presidential and vice presidential debate primers with Skidmore faculty to “A Guide to Election Watching 2020” on Nov. 3 that will include an explanation of the election map, when and where to expect election results and why it will take longer for the presidential race to be called than in past election years. The locations and times for on-campus voter registration are listed on the programming schedule as well.

Visitors to the webpage will also find additional information on how to register to vote, complete a mail-in ballot and locate polling places. Faculty experts and media mentions and interviews are also featured on the site, showcasing the many ways in which members of the Skidmore community are sharing their knowledge and voices.

“In line with our liberal arts mission, Skidmore fully supports and encourages the discussion of diverse opinions and ideas as a means for all of us to reflect, learn and grow,” said President Conner. “It is our hope that more citizens participate in the political process, especially by voting.”
