Testimonies and tips for transfer applicants

Charlotte Squire, a history major with minors in art, classics, and media and film studies, is one of many students who have found their stride after transferring to Skidmore.

In addition to her academic studies, she is the general manager of WSPN 91.1 FM, the College’s student-run radio station, as well as vice president of Lively Lucy’s Coffeehouse and coordinator of the campus music venue Falstaff’s.

“You should go to a college that you love. Transferring changed my view of college from ‘just getting through four years’ to ‘waking up every day excited about the things and people I would see that day.’”

The opportunity to explore a variety of academic interests and co-curricular activities is one of the main reasons students choose to transfer to Skidmore.

“At Skidmore, the number of activities I’m interested in increased exponentially,” says psychology major Spencer Evett, a junior from outside of Boston, Massachusetts. “A cappella and improv comedy, some of my favorite activities, were not available to me before coming here.”

Nakeysa Hooglund, a junior from Maine majoring in environmental science and minoring in English, adds, “There is a diverse selection of classes, clubs and events at Skidmore. There seems to be a place for almost anyone to fit in here. I love how my education continues outside of the classroom as I attend lots of talks, plays and club meetings.”

It's not just students who feel this way. Skidmore professors look forward to the opportunity to support transfer students.

“We want transfer students to know that, as faculty, we are always asking ourselves how we can help our students become the very best version of themselves,” says Associate Professor of Spanish Grace Burton. “We want to help them develop their minds by introducing them to new ideas and ways of thinking and inculcate in them a kind of intellectual flexibility that will carry them into the future.”
