How to Maximize Digital Networking

April 7, 2020

Student uses computerThe majority of engagement with employers happens online, and there are multiple options.

Many Skidmore students search through Handshake for job or internship opportunities,  or use LinkedIn to connect to a recruiter.  Students have also benefited from asking a mentor for advice through the Career Advisor Network (CAN).

With all of these options still available during a time when networking is conducted through virtual options, now is the right time to maximize these services to benefit your search.

Here are a few best practice tips to assist students in networking in a digital world:

  • Employers are connecting with students via virtual events such as Information Sessions, Interviews, Q&A’s and even virtual office tours. Treat these virtual events as you would an in-person meeting. Being prepared will alleviate any stressors with these new formats. Check out this article on how to prepare for a virtual event to help leave an impression.
  • Take this opportunity to Update your Handshake Profile. It’s a simple and effective way to get employers who are still actively engaged on Handshake to notice candidates! About 80% of students who fill out their profile with preferences for job type, location and role, receive messaging from an employer.
  • Connecting with peers and alumni could be more important than ever before. Take this opportunity to seek guidance from a mentor on the Career Advisor Network(CAN), read peer reviews on Handshake and talk with representatives on LinkedIn from companies of interest. This is a chance to conduct company research and ask questions. Reaching out to others can provide meaningful advice.
  • Check out the “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) Session every weekday from April 1 to April 17 at 3PM EST/12PM PT. These FREE sessions offer virtual advice from volunteer career counselors across the country. Registration is NOT required. Just click this link at 3PM EST to join Handshake's open session.  Students are able to ask questions or just drop in to listen.
  • Additionally, here is a list of FREE services and resources available to college students affected by the current state of events.

And remember-- Skidmore's Career Development Center remains here for students and alumni.  Stay engaged with us during this time, and refer to our resources and services for more additional support and information.
